I'm not sure the requirements you have for high quality, but have you tried converting with doPDF and selecting the "Best quality" on the save window to see if the result fits your need?

You can disable updates by opening the Getting Started window, going to Tools and then click on Check for Updates. You can disable from there the option to check for updates.
