if you're looking for more advanced pdf merging/combining, you can take a look at novapdf too - http://www.novapdf.com/ - it lets you combine several files into a single PDF.

doPDF doesn't support multiple file conversions to pdf, are you sure you were using it? I mean it's true that you can select 3 files, right click and hit Print, but then it will open each file individually and create the PDF from it, and it also keeps the original name.

Make sure the pdf you open is not read-only, as it will prompt you to save a copy.

And you did reinstall MS Word? I would say you should do a repair for office, maybe Word is the culprit here. Checking for updates for it is another solution, and eventually look in the Administrative Tools - Events Viewer for any crash reports on Word (or anything else suspicious).

Permissions are based on the logged-in user permission, so if you are an administrator you should have access to that folder. If you are a limited user I suggest you create a new folder where to save the PDF file instead of trying to save to that one that returns the error.
