Carol, doPDF is freeware so there's no license that needs to be activated/entered. If you get an error message it is a problem in dopdf and if possible you should send us a problem description at support@novapdf.com

Hi,
doPDF will create the resulting PDF just as a real printer would create it only it's an electronic format and not printed paper. So doPDF won't retain security restrictions.

Can you try to reinstall doPDF? It might not have been correctly installed.

No, you cannot set during installation a parameter to disable updates. Yes, we have all previous versions of dopdf downloadable from http://www.dopdf.com/download.php (on the bottom right is a box with the links).
