Is it possible to convert a Word document into a pdf file in such a way thta all the hyperlinks that refer to locations within the document are preserved in output pdf?

With dopdf any word documents converted that have visible hyperlinks (i.e. start with http or www) will be active pdf links (clickable).
However if a link is "hidden" it will not be converted. There is a commercial program, novapdf, that will install an addin for Microsoft Word, which will convert hidden hyperlinks too.

My document is compiled in Openoffice.org Writer, but saved as a Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP [.doc] with active visible hyperlinks that show the http://www.site when the mouse hovers over the blue underlined hyperlinked text. This document did not convert with with active (clickable) pdf links. What is the solution please?

Try opening the PDF with a reader such as Adobe Reader or Foxit Reader, as the links are activated by the PDF reader (if you have them installed make sure you have a newer version).
